This side-adventure is a great lead-in to the Parker Chance series, but is also fun for those who have already read the Fifth Specter and are looking for something to tide them over until the next book is released. I read this after reading the Fifth Specter and I really enjoyed getting to see more of Sparky, since he is such an interesting, quirky character.Product details

19-year-old James Sparks, known as Sparky, just started his job as docent a local university. When a mysterious inventor returns to Stonyford Hollow, Spark finds himself risking his job. With the inventor's unusual blood extractor, he'll be able to obtain shadow dog's blood. A rare type of animal blood that will make whoever possesses it very rich. Things the inventor starts doing, however, cast suspicion on the man. What lengths will Sparky go to to obtain the blood? Can the inventor be trusted.
A short story that's almost too short. The characters are likable, but to understand the plot, readers will have to have read the first book. The plot is well-developed for a short story, but leaves the reader a little confuse at how everything happened in the book. Readers, however, who have read the other book in the series and who like fantasy, inventions, and books where the main character outwits the villain of the book might enjoy reading this book.
This short story is a filler piece between the first book in the series The Fifth Specter (Parker Chance Series) and the upcoming second book which should be published in Winter 2011. In the book we meet Sparky and Dympna, two 19 year olds just completing prepatory school and about to move in to advanced studies. Sparky's father died trying to research Shadow Dog blood. When he gets the chance to finish the work his father died for, he has to take it. If you like books about young people taking on, and winning against corrupt adults in power, this is a good book for you. It was interesting enough that I'm going to pick up the first book in the series to find out more about Sparky an Dympna.
I have not read the two books in this series, but my hope is that they're more original and enjoyable than this slight and derivative tale. Replace "superhuman" with the word "wizard" and it wouldn't be surprising to see Harry Potter and his friends pop up in the next scene.
